How to Pay for Assisted Living in New York

Many seniors can afford assisted living services while safeguarding their financial stability by incorporating various payment strategies. The most common payment options include Medicaid programs, veterans’ benefits, and private income and assets.

  • Medicaid: New York’s robust Medicaid program pays for assisted living services through several avenues, including the Managed Long Term Care Program Waiver, Community First Choice Option, Assisted Living Program, and the Personal Care Services Program. These programs pay for benefits such as personal care, meals, and nonemergency medical transportation.
  • Medicare: Medicare doesn’t pay for the nonmedical services assisted living residents receive. However, seniors who require skilled nursing services in assisted living can use their Part B coverage to pay for rehabilitative therapies, medication administration, and durable medical equipment.
  • VA Benefits: Qualified veterans in assisted living receive financial assistance through Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits, as well as the VA Health Insurance Geriatrics and Extended Care program. These programs help seniors pay for personal care services, transportation, meals, and recreation.
  • Private Payments: Assisted living communities accept private payments for all services and fees, including housing, personal care, recreational activities, salon services, and transportation. Depending on a resident’s income and assets, these payments may come from pension income, Social Security, long-term care insurance, and certain life insurance plans.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in New York

Beyond state Medicaid, the state of New York provides a couple waiver programs that help seniors afford their chosen assisted living facility. The Managed Long Term Care Waiver helps residents with payment in assisted living facilities and the Assisted Living Program helps those who qualify for nursing home care but want to live in an assisted living facility afford it.
